RIP MCA

Yesterday marked the passing of one of the forefathers of hip hop, Adam Yauch. I'm still in a bit of shock over it, and my heart just aches. Celebrity deaths usually don't get to me, but this loss has hit home.

The Beastie Boys have been my go-to for music over the past 25 years, to lift my spirits, to celebrate and to just get moving. You seriously can't not like them.

Licensed to Ill was the straight-up soundtrack in high school for me. I was lucky enough to see them live, they were amazing. And he was always my favorite in the band.

It was all about his voice, and all the ways he used it. Low and rough calling out the craziest rhymes, but also loud and strong in his humanitarian efforts, calling attention to the Tibetan struggle.

It is sad to know such a talented and thoughtful voice is now silenced. Too damn soon. Whenever someone that big in one's youth passes, part of your own youth dies too. It just never gets easier.

I will try to pay tribute by cherishing the music, use it to celebrate life, and keep one's own voice strong.

And play his voice. LOUD.

Much love to his family and friends, and the two brothers left behind.

New Sketch, Light Years

Worked on this sketch on Saturday afternoon. Hadn't thought of anything in particular when I drew it, but it definitely fits with the song, "Light Years". That song has taken on deeper meaning to me as I cope with loss.

"Your light's reflected now,... reflected from afar...
We were but stones,... your light made us stars"

A closer detail...

I am sharing this as prints using two color combinations - with a white background and gray.

...Pearl Jam took to the stage for the very first time.

It is incredible to think it has been that long. It wasn't until 1992 that my love affair with the band began. A classmate letting me listen to "Ten" during class. Watching the MTV Unplugged special...by the time it was finished, the die was cast, and it was all over.

Eighteen years later, their music still speaks to me, moves me. Inspires me.  Their energy in concert is electrifying and contagious. After 35+ shows, I always walk away from each show with a new memory, perhaps a song speaking to me in a different way, depending on where I am in my life the moment I hear it.

As an artist, I find inspiration in many things - art, music, sculpture, architecture, nature, the love of family and friends that surrounds me. All these things feed my creativity. This band's music has been a solid source of inspiration, and has helped bring some light when things have been dark.

I know it is hard to explain to people why I make a point of seeing them as often as I do, or why they mean so much. It's beyond having a favorite album or particular performance. I've gotten to meet some amazing people thanks to this band, traveled to interesting places, had incredible experiences. Hell, I would have never gotten into the shirt business if it wasn't for the 10c contest!

The winning shirt design was inspired by "Release" and that one line...."I'll ride the wave, where it takes me". It means a lot to me, to keep strong, get through the bad times and relish the good.

I look forward to more years of beautiful music, artistic conviction and sweet inspiration...and to Bridge School this weekend to celebrate it all :)  I look forward to seeing familiar and new faces, and hopefully some folks sporting my shirts!

Have a beautiful weekend everyone, and feel inspired by whatever moves you deeply.
